Summer Mise En Scene
Anna Soloniuk, Senior Reporter
It's the most wonderful time of the year! Not only does the summer season allow us to unleash our winter white bodies as canvases for the sun's ultraviolet rays, but it is also when movie studios release their potential blockbusters in hopes that they will be the talk for the rest of the year. So before you oil up for your afternoons at Shasta Lake and aloe down for your anticipated fresh air filled nights, throw on some water wings and cannonball into previewing some scrumptious summer movies.
Blasting off the season in May is the ever anticipated return of a magnetic superhero movie, Iron Man 2. The sequel-filled summer keeps rolling with familiar faces in Shrek Forever After, Toy Story 3, and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, just to name a few. Apparently still not considered over done, there are an abundance of reboots and adaptations that give us a fresh look at classic heroes such as, Robin Hood, The A-Team, and Karate Kid. Of course if the romance bug has bitten you, there are the date movies, Killers, Knight & Day, Letters to Juliet, and for the action craving couple, The Expendables.
Iron Man 2 was released May 7th, starring some familiar faces such as Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Scarlett Johansson. The outstanding, rather egotistical Tony Stark is back, who declares that his Iron Man identity and the technology that comes with it will remain his property, against the will of the government. Downey Jr. told the press, “..being Iron Man would be much more of a side job in the sequel,” but based on the clips in the trailer, there will be plenty of action sequences and bad-guy destruction to go around, so no need to worry.
Shorty after U-Prep students are freed from school to frolic and enjoy summer, Toy Story 3 returns to the big screen, June 18th. Directed by Lee Unkrich, who also directed Pixar classics such as Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, and Toy Story 2, the expectations for Toy Story 3 could be higher than any Pixar movie so far. Fifteen years after the original Toy Story, Andy’s mom donates his beloved toys to Sunnyside daycare center as Andy prepares to go off to college. There, our familiar cast of heroes meets fourteen new friends – including Stretch the Octopus, Buttercup the Unicorn, and Sunnyside's unofficial ambassador, Lots-o'-Huggin Bear. Eventually, the gang discovers that Andy is looking for them and they embark on a quest to come home.
Want to spice things up mid-summer? Try to fit Salt, released July 23rd, into your fabulous summer plans. Salt is the story of a CIA operative who is accused of being a Russian double agent intent on assassinating the president and must evade capture long enough to prove her innocence. This thriller stars the much worshipped Angelina Jolie, with Liev Schreiber and Chjwetel Ejiofor.
