New York, New York:Mayor pushes for fuel-efficient taxis

New York mayor Michael Bloomberg is attempting to convince taxi companies to use more fuel-efficient vehicles by changing lease caps based on fuel efficiency. The most commonly used vehicle now is a Ford Crown Victoria, which only gets about 17 miles to the gallon in the city, and the changes to lease caps would reduce the lease companies can charge by about $12 for each shift, or a yearly loss of $8,500 per vehicle. On the other hand, owners could increase the charge for hybrid or fuel-efficient cars by $3, which equates to a $2,000 yearly profit for owners. Drivers who own their cars already have an incentive to drive fuel-efficient vehicles, said Bloomberg.

Germany:Murder, or love-sick stupidity?

A 22-year old German man charged with murder who destroyed his apartment and killed his neighbor tells the court he was just trying to kill himself after his 17-year old girlfriend broke up with him. He opened the natural gas taps in his apartment, apparently attempting to die of asphyxiation. His ex-girlfriend arrived some time later at the apartment to retrieve her possessions and lit a cigarette, igniting the gas, exploding half of the apartment building, and killing the man's 45-year old neighbor.

Both the man and his ex survived the blast. Ralf Wolters, a court spokesman, says the man did not expect the risk of an explosion.

Wolters reports that the man is charged with murder, attempted murder, and grievous bodily harm.
