By now we
have all heard many times of the trampling in the Long Island Wal-Mart
on Black Friday, which resulted in the death of a man. This type
of tragedy seems to happen every year on Black Friday, which takes
place on the Friday after Thanksgiving. For Americans this is an
event of wonderful sales in which we purchase all the gifts we need
for Christmas. One student who participated in this America event
is Brianna O’Leary,(11) “It seems all the shopping frenzy
takes away from the true meaning of Christmas, but then again I
participated in it.” Other nations around the world participate
in similar shopping days each with their own twist.
Canada participates in a similar event; although takes a different
spin on
the shopping season. They celebrate in a event called Boxing Day
which results in similar frenzies but is the day after Christmas.
This is a day fraught with the same mega sales as our Black Friday.
Although, to be candid, their event usually doesn’t end with
death.
The U.K also has Boxing Day along with shopping sprees held the
day after Thanksgiving, but the event is quite up to the U.S. standards
of Black Friday.
So don’t worry no matter what country you find yourself in
you will, probably, be able to participate in some type of crazy
commercialism during the holiday season.
